short films

I recently enjoyed writing a full review about Ornana Films‘ film (Notes on) Biology for Short of the Week. Overall, watching this short feels like you are really sitting next to your best friend in Biology class as they animate the story and you beatbox the soundtrack. Danny Madden, Will Madden, and Jonathan Silva deliver a fantastic piece of work that holds steady all the way to the thematic end credits.

Couch Fest Films “Best Animation” 2011.  Osman Cerfon‘s Sticky Ends is not as romantic as the title implies (sigh) yet it is still clever and dark as ever.

Osman Cerfon first studied graphic design in Chaumont, then Fine Arts in Epinal, and finally animation in “La Poudrière” school in Valence, where he graduated in 2007 with the film Tête-à-tête (Head-to-head). Since 2007, he works on various projects as a scriptwriter or as an animation technician. In parallel, he develops The Jinx Chronicles, a collection of short films where misfortune tracks those who alas find themselves on its way.

Talented filmmaker/animator Dustin Grella has been creating short animations from messages he receives on his answering machine.  We especially enjoyed this short clip and not just because it has a 90-year-old woman with a lonely libido.

Below is an introduction to his project called Animation Hotline:

It looks like we aren’t the only ones stalking Mr. Grella.  He has recently been invited to create a full-feature film for the Cannes Film Festival based on the ideas from his voice-mail animations.

The big news most recently is that it’s been included to screen as a part of a feature film at the Cannes Film Festival in late May. The topic of the film is ‘The Other’ and I’m sending out a request for people to leave messages that use ‘The Other’ as the concept behind the message (I’m putting a more detailed description of what ‘the other’ might mean at the bottom of the email). If you participate, please leave your name because for this one I am going to need to get a signed waiver. I’ll need to put you in the credits of the film!!!

Interested in participating?  You are very wise, reader. More info here.

We first were introduced to Dustin Grella’s work at the SF Shorts and still get goose bumps when we watch his film, Prayers for Peace.  This film went on to win the Golden Couch Award in 2009 for some film festival called Couch Fest Films:

Of course Danny DeVito is wise enough to respect and love Shorts.  In fact, here he is promoting his own site full of horror Shorts called The Blood Factory.  Love horror?  You should probably watch the entire 1-minute video.

Danny DeVito will be appearing at Comic-Con to promote his latest project, a horror website called The Blood Factory which will apparently showcase horror short films.  DeVito has recorded this must watch 1-minute clip.

See if Oscar-nominated Shorts are playing at theater near you.

If not, roll cars and burn tires (dear .GOV, we’re kidding).

We just stopped checking our email/FB/G+/twitter like they were smoke breaks so we could watch this clever/inspiring short Doc about World of Warcraft addiction.

“IRL – In Real Life is a short, light-hearted documentary looking at the effects of World of Warcraft addiction/compulsion, produced as part of a 3rd Year Film Production project at the University of the Creative Arts.”

This website creates films from the limits you send them. We sent them: Make a 360° matrix-like scene using only super-8 cameras–brah ha ha!!!

From their website:

“All of the films at www.finite-films.com are inspired by YOU. Every movie is defined by “constraints” or rules that are submitted by visitors to our website, and we release a new film every month.”
