short film

I recently enjoyed writing a full review about Ornana Films‘ film (Notes on) Biology for Short of the Week. Overall, watching this short feels like you are really sitting next to your best friend in Biology class as they animate the story and you beatbox the soundtrack. Danny Madden, Will Madden, and Jonathan Silva deliver a fantastic piece of work that holds steady all the way to the thematic end credits.

With short films, sometimes it can be difficult to squeeze in genuine character development without it feeling too heavy handed.  With Oppitunti / A Lesson, the director Outi Hartikainen does an amazing job of crafting a pure and simple piece all under 4 minutes.  I mean, we’ve watched certain Sci-Fi prequels that can’t create a decent character even given 142 minutes and billions of dollars in over-used CGI.

It’s a short film about prejudice, about forced uniformity among pupils, and about how, for reasons of conscience, one can even question authority.  This is a student project from Tampere Uni. of Applied Sciences, produced in 2010.

Couch Fest Films “Best Animation” 2011.  Osman Cerfon‘s Sticky Ends is not as romantic as the title implies (sigh) yet it is still clever and dark as ever.

Osman Cerfon first studied graphic design in Chaumont, then Fine Arts in Epinal, and finally animation in “La Poudrière” school in Valence, where he graduated in 2007 with the film Tête-à-tête (Head-to-head). Since 2007, he works on various projects as a scriptwriter or as an animation technician. In parallel, he develops The Jinx Chronicles, a collection of short films where misfortune tracks those who alas find themselves on its way.

Doc Filmmaker Errol Morris’ great Short about ‘El Wingador’ a pro chicken wing eater. 15 pounds of tootsie rolls a day for training–respect.

From an interview with Errol Morris in the New York Times:

“A bit of  background about how I came to make this short film.  I had been hired by the ad agency Draftfcb/Chicago to shoot a campaign for KFC’s new grilled chicken, or KGC.  KFC vs. KGC.  For a 30-second spot on the grilled hot wings, I cast El Wingador.  On the spur of the moment, I decided to shoot a little extra.  This film grew out of that shoot.  The ad campaign proved so successful that I became the first non-KFC employee to be given the coveted Breakout Bucket Award.”

We just stopped checking our email/FB/G+/twitter like they were smoke breaks so we could watch this clever/inspiring short Doc about World of Warcraft addiction.

“IRL – In Real Life is a short, light-hearted documentary looking at the effects of World of Warcraft addiction/compulsion, produced as part of a 3rd Year Film Production project at the University of the Creative Arts.”
