Megan Watkins

We’re still trying to figure out if this 1-minute short is inspiring or depressing. Regardless, what we do know is that this short is fun to watch.

Stylized, beautiful, and only 57 seconds.

Inspired by comics, film noir and the BABX track: “Remintgon Requiem” , I designed, animated and edited this animation piece.

Tropfest 2012 finalists

Tropfest recently uploaded all of their finalists from their 2012 festival.  There were many great films. Here is our short list from their short list:

Boo! directed by Rupert Reid was our favorite.

Lemonade Stand by Alethea Jones – Movie Extra Tropfest 2012 Winner.

Kitchen Sink Drama directed by Nicholas Clifford.

Photo Booth directed by Michael Noonan.

Of course, we can’t resist mentioning that last year’s Tropfest winner, Animal Beatbox, also won Best Music Video at Couch Fest Films 2011.

You can watch all 16 of Tropfest 2012 finalists here.

For 2012, Tropfest is celebrating their 20 year history.

Couch Fest Films “Best Animation” 2011.  Osman Cerfon‘s Sticky Ends is not as romantic as the title implies (sigh) yet it is still clever and dark as ever.

Osman Cerfon first studied graphic design in Chaumont, then Fine Arts in Epinal, and finally animation in “La Poudrière” school in Valence, where he graduated in 2007 with the film Tête-à-tête (Head-to-head). Since 2007, he works on various projects as a scriptwriter or as an animation technician. In parallel, he develops The Jinx Chronicles, a collection of short films where misfortune tracks those who alas find themselves on its way.

Talented filmmaker/animator Dustin Grella has been creating short animations from messages he receives on his answering machine.  We especially enjoyed this short clip and not just because it has a 90-year-old woman with a lonely libido.

Below is an introduction to his project called Animation Hotline:

It looks like we aren’t the only ones stalking Mr. Grella.  He has recently been invited to create a full-feature film for the Cannes Film Festival based on the ideas from his voice-mail animations.

The big news most recently is that it’s been included to screen as a part of a feature film at the Cannes Film Festival in late May. The topic of the film is ‘The Other’ and I’m sending out a request for people to leave messages that use ‘The Other’ as the concept behind the message (I’m putting a more detailed description of what ‘the other’ might mean at the bottom of the email). If you participate, please leave your name because for this one I am going to need to get a signed waiver. I’ll need to put you in the credits of the film!!!

Interested in participating?  You are very wise, reader. More info here.

We first were introduced to Dustin Grella’s work at the SF Shorts and still get goose bumps when we watch his film, Prayers for Peace.  This film went on to win the Golden Couch Award in 2009 for some film festival called Couch Fest Films:

With the censorship of Western movies (gasp!), Romanians had to smuggle in all of our classics from the 80′s right under the nose of commies. Margareta Nistor dubbed more than 5000 films of these films.

Viva Community!

Margareta Nistor dubbed over 5,000 foreign films that entered the country illegally and were distributed on the black market. Her husky and high-pitched voice became the symbol of freedom. ‘Chuck Norris vs. Communism’ follows the story of the tapes, the lives that were touched by them and the people who made it possible for Romanians to escape their harsh reality through the spectacular world of film.

Sad and accurate article about the top mistakes that new (and seasoned) filmmakers make.  Our favorite, “Your friends can’t act”.  Yep…we’d add that your girl/boyfriend can’t act either.  Read the rest here.

Breaking Out and Breaking In, a film fest about busting out of prisons or busting open banks. We’re taking notes–you never know.

If not, roll cars and burn tires (dear .GOV, we’re kidding).
